My Favorite Food

Ramen
Ramen
playing around with food photography

So I don't know if you know this (maybe people on instagram do, since I take pictures of it semi-frequently), but I love ramen. Yes, those 10 cent little bricks of noodles that are so bad, but so needed during those poor college years. I've been eating this stuff since I was five years old, and for some reason I haven't stopped. My parents say I'm easy to feed (yet I'm the pickiest eater you'll ever meet).

But over the years I've stacked up so many bowls of ramen, full of starch and sodium, that I think it's probably what gave me my hypoglycemia problem. I tried weening myself off the stuff, but gosh darn, these noodles can be used for so many different recipes.

So instead, I've tried to make my ramen with more variety and more "authentic". I know in Japan they have ramen shops where they put so many delicious additions to the flavorful broth (mostly miso broth) and noodles like meat, eggs, and veggies. So these are the different ways I've steadily made my ramen more beneficial for me instead of (mostly) bad for me.

Some easy ingredients to add:
( - means cooked with ramen, * means not cooked with ramen)

- Leftover meat from another dinner night (beef, chicken, pork, ham, turkey)
- Chopped up mushrooms
* Fresh spinach
* Egg (I usually poach it in the microwave and add it later)
 - Broccoli
* Green onions or chives

And I usually discard 2/3 of the water that it cooked in, and use half the packet of flavoring for less sodium.

Do you eat ramen? How do you like to mix it up?

OMG Natty... I so love ramen. And the shame is I never went to a real ramen restaurant (I do know there are some really good ones here in Vancouver).
I try also to... healthy it up a bit. I love to add spring onions, mushrooms (I cook them when I add the noodles to the water), roasted chichen that i cut into small bites...
I know it is not good for me and limit myself. But.... i am weak lol

@Nolwenn OH GOSH. Please go to a ramen shop. For me!! We have absolutely none in Texas, it's pretty rare here in the US (I hear Chicago has some but that's all I've heard). We know it's not good for us, we'll be weak together. *raise fist*

@Laurie Oh, hmm, my four favorite comfort foods. Definitely Elotas (roasted corn with mayo and cheese), anything pasta (I can eat spaghetti forever), sushi (eel and salmon!), and english breakfast tea (it's not a food, but definitely a comfort). :D
